GRASSHOPPER: Sifu, how do you know when you are a true master?
SIFU: When the other masters set a place for you at their table.Over 60 of the most senior and highest ranking **"Kenpo Masters" from all over the world hosted the largest gathering of Kenpo/Kempo and Kenpo based styles practitioners in the long history of Kenpo. Over 1000 were in attendance in Las Vegas, Feb 5,6,7 at what was truly billed a "Once in a Lifetime" experience. To call yourself a "Master" is one thing! To be accepted as a "Master" by the gathering of masters indeed establishes one's true credentials. All the Kenpo masters and their representatives were given an opportunity conduct seminars and let everyone present could witness their (kenpo spirit), knowledge, ability, and contribution to the art!
The question often arises - when do you become a "master"? How old do you have to be? What rank do you have to be. The answer is usually quite simple - when the senior masters and grand masters accept you as a master - you are a master!
I am using "Kenpo Masters" as a generic term to cover everyone. Because of Kenpo diversity many different tittles are used by different Kenpo based systems. The term I use, "Kenpo Masters" is not to taken to show any disregard or respect for their individual titles or rank used by their own organization. Some simply use the title: Sijo; Professor; or Sifu/Sensei. While other may use Master, Grand Master, Shihan, Hanshi, Renshi, Guru, etc.
The term "Kenpo Masters' and Kenpo Senior Masters' are the two levels that the Yudanshakai - confers upon its honored members. Preserving the respect for the past and our heritage is the main goal of the Yudanshakai - and as such our "Senior Masters' are indeed "Senior" in years, knowledge and most important what they have given back to the art! Almost all of the "Seniors" are in their 60's, 70's and 80's!
